The Lemon House opposite the National Theatre

The topic of skyscrapers in the urban environment has become more and more relevant lately. However, not many people know that the first skyscraper in Sofia is already 103 years old!

This is the house of the Gendovic family, better known as the "lemon" house opposite the National Theatre.

At the beginning of the last century, when all buildings were a maximum of 4 floors, the Gendovich house was not only the tallest, but also the most beautiful in Sofia at that time and thus gained popularity as the first Sofia skyscraper!

The architecture of the house is Viennese with terraces, bay windows through the floors and a richly ornamented facade. Gendovic's house is also the first building in Sofia with its own local heating.

The project for the house was designed by one of the most prominent Bulgarian architects - Nikola Lazarov, who was also the founder of the first private design bureau in Bulgaria, and the idea for its construction was the grandfather - a comrade of Levski, who was awarded the title of "Baron" by the Russian Tsar Alexander II for his participation in the Russo-Turkish Liberation War.
